Having aced the six crashworthiness tests, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E has scored a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
This is the maximum result it could get, as vehicles need to have ‘good’ or ‘acceptable’ headlights across the range in order to qualify for the Top Safety Pick+, and Ford’s electric crossover doesn’t.
According to the safety agency, the LED projector headlamps offered on the Premium, GT and First Edition trim levels have ‘good’ ratings. However, the clusters mounted on the Select and California Route 1 grades were rated ‘marginal’, and they affected the overall result.

In contrast to the headlights, the standard front crash prevention system earned ‘superior’ and ‘advanced’ scores in the car-to-car and car-to-pedestrian evaluations respectively.
“It’s fantastic to see more proof that these vehicles (electric) are as safe or safer than gasoline- and diesel-powered cars”, said IIHS President, David Harkey, referring to the Mach-E as well as the Volvo XC40 Recharge, which qualified for the Top Safety Pick+ award. “We can now say with confidence that making the U.S. fleet more environmentally friendly doesn’t require any compromises in terms of safety.”
Ford is satisfied with the overall result, with chief product platform and operations officer, Hau Thai-Tang, saying that “This award validates the effort of the Mustang Mach-e team to create an electric vehicle that not only turn heads, but helps keep our customers and their passengers safe. We continue to prioritize safety performance for our entire portfolio.”
