In the latest installment of our ongoing series, ‘Premium SUVs Selling Like Hot Cakes’, sales of the GV80 amounted to more than all of Genesis’ sedans combined in the first quarter of 2021.
The result is that Genesis’ sales for the first three months of 2021 are 108% higher than they were in 2020. Moreover, its March sales have more than tripled, per Automotive News.
March numbers are a little inflated in the U.S. since it was the month most of the country first went into lockdown in 2020, but with sales topping 8,200 in Q1 2021, there’s reason to celebrate for the Korean luxury brand.

Genesis still has some ground to make up compared to its more established competition. Although the Germans have yet to announce their sales figures, the competition in the premium space is stiff.
Whereas Genesis’ sales failed to crack five figures, most premiums already have done easily. Acura and Cadillac’s sales have both topped 37,000 this year, while Lexus‘ sales have nearly reached 75,000. Even Infiniti’s sales are over 19,000 at this point.
Still, for a young brand with fewer models than its competition that’s trying to break into a hotly contested market, Genesis’ progress is encouraging.
The brand also plans to introduce a range of EVs in the near future, which may give it even more of a boost.
