When GMC introduced the 2024 Hummer EV SUV this weekend, there was a curious omission – a 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS) variant.
While that sounds strange, the 2022 Hummer EV SUT offers a tri-motor powertrain that produces an estimated 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS). It should enable the pickup to rocket from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in three seconds, which is 1.5 seconds faster than the Ram 1500 TRX.
The SUV, on the other hand, has a tri-motor powertrain that develops up to 830 hp (619 kW / 842 PS). This enables the model to run from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in approximately 3.5 seconds.

While that’s nothing to sneeze at, we asked why the model isn’t getting a four figure output. The company didn’t exactly give a reason, but performance guru Al Oppenheimer said he’s “not sorry” there isn’t a Hummer SUV developing 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS).
While the reasoning remains unclear, it might come down to the battery pack. Due to the SUV’s smaller dimensions, it has a 20 module Ultium battery whereas the pickup has 24 modules. This also explains why the SUV has an estimated range of 300+ miles (483+ km), while the truck bumps that up to 350+ miles (563+ km).
Regardless, it’s hard to argue with 830 hp (619 kW / 842 PS) as that figure bests the 577 hp (430 kW / 585 PS) Mercedes-AMG G63 and 754 hp (522 kW / 764 PS) Rivian R1S. GMC officials also noted they’re working to improve performance, so the door might not be completely shut on a 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS) variant.
In other news, GMC officials revealed they expect the SUV will be more popular than the SUT. This isn’t terribly surprising, but it’s interesting to note the truck will be launched this fall while the SUV won’t arrive until early 2023.
Update: GMC confirmed the reason the SUV eschews a 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS) variant is due to the “smaller battery.” However, they added “It’ll still put a smile on your face!”
