Honda announced its accelerated strategy towards the complete electrification of its range, saying that is now targeting to sell only EVs globally by 2040.

The Japanese carmaker’s new plan is for battery-electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles to account for 40 percent of its total sales in North America by 2030, and 80 percent by 2035, before reaching 100 percent globally in 2040.

Previously, the Japanese carmaker said that they are going to offer only electrified cars in Europe by the end of 2022 and the new announcement builds on that plan.

New electric models coming soon

To achieve the new targets, Honda is going to launch a range of new electric vehicles based on a new EV-specific platform, called the e:Architecture. The first electric models to use it will be introduced to the North American market in the second half of the decade, and then to other regions around the world.

While Honda is working on its new EV-specific architecture on its own, the Japanese carmaker is also developing two large electric SUV models in collaboration with GM. The two new electric SUVs will be using GM’s Ultium batteries and are going to be launched in the North American region for the 2024 model year, one from the Honda brand and the other from Acura.

In China, Honda is planning to launch no less than 10 new electric models within the next five years, starting with the production version of the SUV e:prototype, which was shown in Shanghai Auto Show, which will debut in spring 2022.

Solid-State batteries later this decade

In addition, Honda is making its own research on solid-state batteries, with the goal of offering them in their new electric models in the second half of the 2020s. The company is currently working on how to increase the capacity and lower the cost of the next-generation battery technology.

Honda will also expand its lineup of fuel-cell EVs, aiming to use the technology on a wider range of applications, including commercial trucks, as well as stationary and movable power sources.
