The Fast & Furious’ Letty, played by Michelle Rodriguez, is getting her own film in the franchise’s cinematic universe.

The character will be the focus of a spin-off movie, à la Hobbs & Shaw, reports Giant Freakin Robot citing unnamed sources. Rodriguez’s character has been involved in the series since the very first film.

The actor, an action movie veteran, has been vocal about the limited role of women in the Fast & Furious series in the past. Indeed, giving a female character a leading role in a less ensemble-focused FFCU movie would make sense from a representation standpoint.

Reports have also emerged that the main Fast and Furious movies will come to an end after the 11th installment, whose release date is unknown at this point. Creating more breakaway movies based on the characters from the FFCU would also help the studio keep the series going while potentially warding off audience exhaustion.

The Rodriguez-led movie will reportedly be called “Letty” and it will be written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel) and Lindsey Beer (The Kingkiller Chronicles). No plot points have been released at this time.

The latest installment of the central FFCU storyline, F9, is set to hit theaters on June 25. One of the first big blockbuster slated for release since the pandemic hit, it stands to do well at the box office if America’s vaccination efforts continue to prove successful.
