BMW has issued a recall for a handful of X3 and X4 models delivered in the United States due to a potential faulty weld on the fuel tank.
Documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveal that X3, X3 M, and X4 M models built on March 3, 2021 may have a fuel tank that was not produced to specifications and over time, things like road vibrations could lead to a fuel leak, increasing the risk of a fire. BMW has not received any reports of accidents of injuries related to the issue.

BMW initially issued a Delivery Stop as a result of the fuel tank issue but on March 18, 2021, upgraded it to a safety recall. Fortunately, it’s not a widespread issue as just 17 vehicles are involved in the recall. These include the BMW X3 sDrive30i, X3 xDrive30i, X3 M40i, X3 M, and a single X4 xDrive30i.
The German car manufacturer says that when the fuel tank was being produced by an outside supplier, the weld of the inlet check valve to the tank may not have been performed to specifications. It notes that the issue can be noticed through an odor of fuel or a small fuel leak under the vehicle.
Impacted owners are being contacted by phone and if necessary, will be notified by First Class mail and instructed to take their vehicle to an authorized BMW center. Owners will be notified on May 17 and the automaker will replace the fuel tank.
