Hot on the heels of the global unveiling of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV, a handful of publications and YouTubers were granted the opportunity to film it up close and personal.
While one could be excused for thinking the Hummer EV SUV is simply a modified version of the pickup variant with a new roof, GMC has actually made some rather significant changes to it. Most notably, the SUV’s wheelbase is 8.9-inches (226 mm) shorter than the pickup. The body itself is also 20 inches (508 mm) shorter than the pickup but that’s not to say it’s small. In fact, it still measures 196.8 inches (4,999 mm) long and has a 126.7-inch (3,218 mm) wheelbase.

The first video from Car and Driver provides us with an excellent overview of the Hummer EV SUV but the second video from tech YouTuber JerryRigEverything is particularly interesting as it doesn’t just focus on the EV but also some of the technology that underpins it. For example, the YouTuber had the opportunity to take a deep dive into the battery technology powering the vehicle.
Using General Motor’s new Ultium battery technology, the Hummer EV SUV features 20 different battery modules and within each of these modules are 24 pouch-style batteries. All up, this means the SUV’s battery pack has roughly the same capacity as 10,000 smartphone batteries.
Topping out the range is the Edition 1 variant with a tri-motor powertrain that pumps out no less than 830 hp and 11,500 lb-ft (15,592 Nm) of torque. While this is less than the 1,000 hp offered up by the Edition 1 version of the pickup, it is still more than enough to make the SUV very, very quick. In fact, it can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 3.5 seconds.
