The BMW iX will land on U.S. shores next year, but a CarScoops reader has spied a camouflage prototype undergoing testing on the streets of New Jersey.

This iX prototype was snapped by Ken Helman and even though the German car manufacturer unveiled the iX some months ago, it hasn’t gone to the trouble of removing the camouflage from this one. Nevertheless, it’s not hard to determine its identity as the iX is so distinct from all other BMW models currently on the market, as well as those launching in the coming years.

No styling changes will be made to the U.S.-spec model apart from the fitment of amber turn signals to meet local regulations. Helman also snapped a photo looking through the rear window, revealing a whole heap of equipment used to test and monitor the prototype’s various systems.

In Europe, BMW will sell the iX in xDrive 40 and xDrive50 guise, but in the United States, only the xDrive50 will be available. Details about the U.S.-spec xDrive50 remain under wrap,s but it is expected to have a battery pack with over 100 kWh of capacity and will feature a pair of electric motors that combine to deliver in excess of 496 hp. It will be good for 373 miles (600 km) on the WLTP cycle but a figure closer to the 300-mile (482 km) mark on the EPA cycle is to be expected.

Hat tip to Ken Helman for sending these photos our way!
