Commander Name Confirmed For Jeep’s Compass-Based Three-Row Crossover

Jeep has confirmed their upcoming three-row crossover will be called the Commander.

The company also released a new teaser video which shows the model’s silhouette and taillights. While there isn’t much to see, the Commander has a familiar seven slot grille and a pronounced shoulder line. We can also see a gently sloping roof and a relatively flat beltline.

Out back, the model has slender taillights that appear to be connected by a black strip. Below that strip is a chrome accent with Jeep badging.

Jeep didn’t say much about the model, but confirmed it will be built in Brazil. However, the Commander will be a radical departure from its predecessor as it will be based on the Compass instead of the Grand Cherokee.

Spy photographers have snapped the crossover on numerous occasions and the Commander will have longer rear doors and a longer rear overhang. We can also expect revised rear pillars and unique rear quarter glass.

The interior remains more mysterious, but the cabin will likely follow in the footsteps of the facelifted Compass and feature a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster as well as 8.4- and 10.1-inch infotainment systems. More importantly, there will be a third-row seat that turns the Commander into a proper family hauler.

Engine options will likely be shared with the Compass and we should learn more shortly as Jeep said new details will be released soon. That isn’t much of a surprise as the Commander will be launched in the second half of this year.
