Prior to the 720S launching back in 2017, there were rumors online that some P1 owners weren’t too happy that McLaren was about to launch a non-limited production supercar with the type of performance to almost match their million-dollar hypercars that were just a couple of years old.

Fast forward a few years and the 720S hasn’t just proven itself to be one of the quickest production cars ever but it has been followed up by the 765LT which provides even more performance. So, were P1 owners justified in their belief that the Super Series was going to be fast enough to eclipse their prized hypercars?

Brooks from Drag Times recently arranged a handful of races between his Napier Green 765LT and a friend’s P1 and the results may surprise you.

The video starts off with the P1 flexing its muscles on the street and during its first quarter-mile run, it clocks a 10.28 second time, sprinting from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.3 seconds and running from 62 mph to 124 mph (100-200 km/h) in 4.49 seconds, not bad for a first try and while experiencing heaps of wheel spin.

The action then begins with a handful of rolling drag races between the P1 and the 765LT. Whereas the P1 has 903 hp, the 765LT in question has been dyno’d at 755 hp at the wheels, indicating it could have as much as 850 hp at the crank. It is also several hundred pounds lighter than the P1 and actually proves itself to be quicker in a rolling race, albeit only just.
