Cupra has just revealed the new Born EV, the Spanish cousin of the VW ID.3, and naturally, the topic of an even faster version came up, given the brand’s sportier nature.
At launch, the new Cupra Born will be offered with a choice between two batteries and two electric motors driving the rear wheels; the most powerful variant will offer 228 HP and 335 miles of range on WLTP when combined with the bigger 77 kWh battery pack.

During the official reveal of the new Cupra Born, the carmaker’s R&D boss Werner Tietz confirmed that they are thinking about adding a more powerful, four-wheel-drive variant in the lineup but in order for this to happen, they must ensure that there are customers out there who would want such an EV.
“We’re interested in that, but it’s not something that’s currently visible, because we don’t have the high demand for that. It’s a lot of investment to do that full application for the car,” said Tietz to Autocar.
“But for sure, this kind of version drives nicely, and maybe it’s something for the future. Over the lifespan of the car, you can expect we will think about different drivetrains and power levels. Higher-powered versions can be expected some day.”
The news comes just days after VW CEO Ralf Brandstätter revealed the ID X concept, a hot-hatch version of the ID.3, and its specs. Brandstätter revealed some technical details of the ID X but added that it’s not destined for production. This could mean that Cupra may become the first brand inside the Group to offer a hot electric hatch since the Born is so closely related to the ID.3.
The VW ID X concept features a dual-motor setup with a combined output of 328 HP, sending it from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.3 seconds. In addition, the concept is lighter by 200 kg (440 lbs) than the standard ID.3 and features a special ‘Drift’ mode, like the VW Golf R.
