The F9 hype train is steaming along and the upcoming movie’s latest trailer focuses solely on the women of the series.

The trailer features clips of Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Anna Sawai, Cardi B, as well as Oscar-winners Charlize Theron and Dame Helen Mirren, speaking about what their roles mean to them.

“It’s so exciting to have so many badass women in Fast 9,” says Emmanuel. “Fast and Furious women get to show the world what they can do.” Theron adds that “Fast females take ownership of it, they raise the bar. They do the unexpected.”

Indeed, the proportion of the movie’s cast that is played by women is surprisingly high for an action movie. They also appear to be written into much of the action, as the trailer highlights.

The franchise hasn’t always had such a strong track record, though. Michelle Rodriguez famously threatened to leave the series in 2017 following the release of The Fate of the Furious.

“I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise,” she wrote on Instagram at the time.

Since then, though, the producers appear to have listened to her. Reports from 2020 suggested that the Fast Saga would get a movie dedicated to the series’ female characters and just last month reports emerged suggesting that Rodriguez’s character Letty would get her own spin-off, like Dwayne Johnson’s and Jason Statham’s Hobbs and Shaw.

F9 is set to hit theaters on June 25.
