One of the most impressive features of the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck is the ability to use its battery juice to power your house in case of an outage.
Ford calls this feature Intelligent Back Up Power, with the F-150 Lightning capable of offloading up to 9.6 kW of power and becoming a backup generator for households.
The carmaker says that an F-150 Lightning with the Extended-Range battery fully charged is able to provide full-home power for up to three days, based on an average 30kWh of daily consumption. The electric pickup truck can power a house for as long as 10 days if power is rationed.
QOTD: Who Got It Right, Ford’s Straight-Laced F-150 Lightning Or Tesla’s Cocky Cybertruck?
“Whether sheltering during a storm or trying to stay safe in a heatwave, customers can now use their truck to give themselves power when they need it most,” said Ryan O’Gorman, electric vehicle manager, Strategic Partnerships. “F-150 Lightning is built for seamless transitions between charging your vehicle and powering your house when needed – and Ford is the first in the U.S. to offer this capability on an electric truck.”
In order to enable Ford’s Intelligent Backup Power feature, you’ll need the 80A Ford Charge Station Pro installed at your home; the charging station is offered as standard on models with the Extended-Range battery and as an option to the Standard-Range models.
In the case of a power outage, the plugged-in Ford F-150 Lightning automatically begins to send power to your house. Once power is restored, the electric truck reverts back to charging its battery for maximum convenience.
How Much Will The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Cost, Trim Options, And More
Ford says that in the future, they are planning to release a new feature called Intelligent Power, which will allow customers to use their electric trucks to power their homes during the more expensive, peak-energy hours and charge the vehicle’s battery with the low-cost overnight rates, saving them money on electricity bills and taking pressure off the grid during peak hours.
The carmaker is also collaborating with Sunrun, a leading solar company, to allow for an easier installation of the 80A charging station and home integration system, offering customers the opportunity to install solar energy in their homes at the same time.
