General Motors is on a mission to lead the switch to electric vehicles and it’s off to a pretty good start. The automaker reports that it sold 200,268 fully electric vehicles worldwide, according to its sustainability report.
The majority of those sales came from China, where EV infrastructure and acceptance are better than in the U.S. With several new vehicles on their way focused on the U.S. market, though, its sales in the States will likely continue to rise.
As it stands, the HongGuang Mini EV, built with GM’s Chinese partner is the automaker’s, as well as China’s, best-selling electric vehicle. The small car recorded sales of more than 117,000 units, per GM China‘s reporting.
The Chevrolet Bolt, meanwhile, was far behind it with 26,552 vehicles finding a home in 2020, while the Baojun E100 and E200 posted sales of 20,571 and 14,359 units respectively.

It’s worth noting though that electrified vehicles, like plug-in hybrids, are included in EV sales, though as GM is moving away from them, their volume made up a mere 1.2% of the automaker’s electrified vehicle sales last year, a significant decrease from the 2017 peak of 63%.
Despite selling hundreds of thousands of EVs in 2020, GM isn’t yet the leader in the segment. Tesla managed to nearly match GM’s 2020 EV sales in the first quarter of 2021 alone, where it shifted 184,800 vehicles, setting a record for the company.
Still, with vehicles like the Hummer EV and the Cadillac Lyriq fast approaching, GM looks set to grow its claim on the EV market.
