While Tesla’s Model 3 Performance hasn’t changed much since its introduction, there were rumors that certain aspects have been tweaked that potentially impact performance on the new models. To find out if there is any truth to this, Carwow compared the older model to the new in a drag race.
On paper, both EVs are the same. However, Tesla fans claim that the newer version boasts a larger battery, while it’s known that it also has acoustic glass, both of which should add weight. In addition, each wheel is supposedly 1Kg heavier than the older Model 3. Other than that, both cars feature dual motors, 457 horsepower, 660 Nm of torque and cost £56,490 out of the factory. As the new Model 3 tips the scales at 1844 kg and the old one at 1847 kg, both cars practically weigh the same too — at least according to the official figures.

As expected, the results are extremely close. In the first race, the older Model 3 gets a better start while the new experiences wheel spin off the line. However, both cars are neck-and-neck before reaching the finish line handing victory to the older car. The second and third runs displayed the same results with the new Model 3 unable to grip as it sprinted out the start line.
The 30 mph and 50 mph rolling races demonstrate that the 2021 Model 3 takes off quicker but couldn’t keep up the pace, as the older version started gaining before they hit the end of the runway.
However, there’s one key difference between the two: tires. The newer car comes with a set of Pirellis, while the older Model 3 Performance was shod in Michelin Pilot Sports. Thus, the wheel spin experienced off the line might be down to possibly inferior rubber on a damp track.
