The McLaren MP4-25A Formula 1 car that Lewis Hamilton drove to victory at the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix will be auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s on July 17.
The auction will take place on the Saturday afternoon of the British Grand Prix immediately before the sport debuts its first-ever Spring Qualifying race. This sale marks the first time that any F1 car driven by Lewis Hamilton has been offered to the public for sale. Interestingly, the auction house says the car will be lapping the circuit during the bidding and pre-auction estimates indicate it will sell for between $5 million and $7 million.
It is unclear just how many 2010 McLaren MP4-25A F1 cars are privately owned but RM Sotheby’s says “it’s believed to be only a scarce few.”

Mark Webber qualified on pole position for the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix and led much of the race. However, following a crash between Webber and teammate Sebastian Vettel, Hamilton inherited the lead and despite a strong challenge from fellow McLaren-Mercedes driver Jenson Button, claimed the victory.
Powering the McLaren MP4-25A is a Mercedes-Benz 2.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine that revs to an extraordinary 18,000 rpm. Coupled to this engine is a seven-speed transmission developed by McLaren Applied Technologies and, including the driver, the car weighs a mere 1,367 lbs (620 kg). The car also features McLaren’s innovative F-Duct system that sports a small air scoop on the nose that funnels air through a duct in the cockpit and towards the rear wing of the car. This increased the MP4-25’s top speed by approximately 6 mph (10 km/h).
