McLaren IndyCar Racer Pato O’Ward Drives The 620R On And Off The Track

Following his first victory in IndyCar on May 2 at the Texas Motor Speedway, Arrow McLaren SP driver Pato O’Ward got back on track, this time with the McLaren 620R.

The hook of the video is that the 620R is a track-focused machine that can handle itself at the hands of a pro driver at Willow Springs, as well as a street-legal supercar perfect for getting that same race car driver to the date that they’re late for.

Limited to just 225 examples globally, 70 of which are are earmarked for North America, the 620R takes several cues from the 570S GT4 race car, maximizing its use of motorsport technology without limiting itself with the restrictions of GT4 regulations.

Powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8, the 620R produces 611 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque. The seven-speed box has “Inertia Push” technology that uses energy stored up in a flywheel into a momentary burst of torque on upshift. Moreover, in Sport mode, a split-second cut of the ignition spark on upshifts lets the driver hear the gear crack into position.

To stay glued to the track, the 620R makes 408 lbs of downforce at 155 mph (250 km/h) thanks to aerodynamic hardware borrowed from the 570S GT4. The suspension has also been lowered, and the hardcore McLaren also features wider-track carbon-ceramic brakes and center-locking wheels. A low-exit stainless steel sports exhaust ensures that it sounds like a race car, too.

Weighing in at 1,282 kg (2,826 lbs) dry, the 620R is about as close as you can get to a GT4 race car for the road.
