Tesla remains the fourth best-selling luxury car brand in the United States after BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz, recent registration data from Experian reveals.
As Tesla doesn’t release sales figures for the U.S. market, the only way to determine just how many vehicles it is delivering to customers is to look at registration data. This data reveals that in the first quarter, the electric car manufacturer registered 71,345 vehicles, a significant 52 per cent increase compared with the first quarter of 2020.

By comparison, BMW remains in top spot with 84,397 registrations, a 29 per cent rise over Q1 2020, and was followed by Lexus with 80,166 registrations (up 32 per cent) and Mercedes-Benz in third with 77,826 registrations, a 24 per cent increase.
Unsurprisingly, Tesla continues to dominate the U.S. market in terms of EV registrations, accounting for no less than 72 per cent of them. The Model Y proved to be the top-registered in the EV last quarter with 40,772 registrations, a cool 41 per cent of the market. Sales of the Model 3 clearly remain strong as 27,362 examples were registered throughout the first three months of the year. The best-selling non-Tesla EV was the Chevrolet Bolt with 9,069 registrations.
As noted by Auto News, California remains the mecca for EVs in the U.S., accounting for 38 per cent of the nation’s total with 37,189 EV registrations. California was followed by Florida with 8,010 registrations, Texas with 5,500 registrations, and New York with 5,047 registrations.
