The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is a very big vehicle and unsurprisingly, it is shaping up to be extremely heavy.

GMC will initially sell the Hummer EV in flagship Edition 1 guise. This model will come standard with three electric motors producing no less than 1,000 hp and according to GM-Trucks, the electric pickup will tip the scales at 9,046 lbs (4,103 kg). If true, that would mean it is roughly 700 lbs heavier than a GMC Sierra 3500HD in crew cab form with dual rear wheels.

One of the reasons behind the Hummer EV Edition 1’s heft is the fact that it is fitted with a massive 200 kWh Ultium battery pack, roughly double the size of what you’ll find in any other EV currently on sale. By comparison, the Cadillac Lyriq that will also use an Ultium battery pack but will be capped at 100 kWh. This goes some way to explaining why the Lyriq weighs 5,610 lbs while the Hummer EV is just over 9,000 lbs.

GM-Trucks adds that the EV’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) will be 10,400 lbs (4,717 kg), which means that it will be classified as a Class 3 truck. Lighter variants will sit in the 2b class.

Despite the reported weight of the Hummer EV Edition 1, GMC is promising some serious performance from its 1,000 hp and 11,500 lb-ft (15,592 Nm) of torque. According to the company, the truck will be able to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in three seconds with the ‘Watts to Freedom’ launch control feature and will have a range exceeding 350 miles (563 km).
