Toyota Teases US-Spec GR 86 Ahead Of Its Debut Next Month

Toyota is holding a reveal event in Texas next month and they’re bringing the redesigned GR 86 along for the ride.

The company is keeping details under wraps, but they released teaser images of the wheels and headlights. Toyota also teased the model will accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 6.1 seconds and gave us a math problem to solve.

For those curious about the latter, it’s 8x + 148 = 10x – 24. If you solve for x, the answer is unsurprisingly 86.

The US-spec model will be unveiled on June 2nd at 10 a.m. EDT but, in the meantime, we’ll remind you the Japanese variant was introduced in April and developed alongside the 2022 Subaru BRZ.

Power is provided by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 232 hp (173 kW / 235 PS) and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) of torque. If those specs carryover to the US model, the car will have 27 hp (20 kW / 27 PS) and 28 lb-ft (38 Nm) more than its predecessor. Regardless of the final numbers, the engine can be connected to a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

Besides being more powerful, the GR 86 has aluminum fenders and an aluminum roof which help to lower the car’s center of gravity. They also help to reduce weight and they’re joined in this effort by new front seats and lighter mufflers.

The sports car also promises to be stiffer as body rigidity has been improved, while torsional rigidity climbs by approximately 50%.

The US-spec GR 86 will be joined by an assortment of other vehicles including the 2022 Prius Nightshade and two “adventure-ready” Tacoma pickups.
