The Mercedes-AMG Project One has been a long time coming and the first customer deliveries should begin sometime this year. Recently, a lightly camouflaged prototype was spied testing at the Nurburgring but it doesn’t appear to have gone entirely to plan.
First is the good news. We always knew that the Project One was going to be fast and throughout this video, the individual behind the wheel can be seen tackling some of the circuit’s most difficult corners at seriously impressive speeds. Not only does the car look fast but it also looks very poised and certainly has all the right ingredients to set a new production car lap record around the infamous German racetrack.

As mentioned, not everything went to plan during testing as shortly after a second prototype appeared at the track, its engine momentarily shut down, forcing the engineer driving the hypercar to restart it before going on their way.
This ordinarily wouldn’t be much of a concern but this isn’t the first time spy photographers at ‘Green Hell’ have seen a Project One prototype unexpectedly shut off. Even Mercedes itself has admitted that making the Formula 1-derived powertrain road-ready has been much more difficult than expected.
As we know, the car features the same 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine as used by Mercedes-AMG Petronas in its hybrid-era Formula 1 cars. Various changes have been made to this engine so it works on the street, including reducing the redline to 11,000 rpm and allowing it to idle at normal speeds. This engine will work alongside four electric motors to produce more than 1,000 hp.
