The third-generation BMW X1 was recently spied testing on the Nurburgring. Set to replace the current one, which has been around since 2015, it is expected to launch in late 2022 in Europe and should arrive in North America for the 2023 model year.
Trying to guess its design is still tricky, as the camouflage and cladding do a good job at hiding the revisions. Nevertheless, it appears that the kidney grille will be significantly bigger, though probably not as big as the new 4-Series. Elsewhere, it is understood to feature slimmer headlights and new taillights, with the latter not being the final production units on this prototype.

While the cabin has yet to open up to the camera, it is believed to have a more minimalistic layout. A curved center screen will likely dominate the new dashboard, providing access to most functions of the car. The air vents, HVAC controls, steering wheel, and gear selector will be redesigned, and the environmentally friendly materials are said to complete the changes. Top-of-the-line grades should feature the latest tech and comfort gear available in the premium subcompact crossover segment.
2022 (or 2023 in North America) BMW X1 will be built around the same front-wheel-drive platform as the upcoming 2-Series Active Tourer MPV. The usual ICE-powered variants will be joined by plug-in hybrid powertrains, and, in a premiere, an all-electric model will complete the lineup in 2023. The iX1 might get a 60 and/or a 90 kWh battery pack, with a 450- and/or 550-km (278/341-mile) range.
