Genesis has updated the 2021 G80 range in Australia with the launch of new diesel variant.
The automaker’s Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series rival is now offered with a 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel engine with 206 hp at 3,800 rpm and 326 lb-ft (442 Nm) of torque between 1,750 rpm and 2,750 rpm.
Genesis notes that this engine offers excellent noise, vibration & harshness levels, adding that the aluminum cylinder block significantly reduces weight. The engine also features variable geometry turbine ball-bearing turbochargers that also reduce friction, improve turbo boost responsiveness, and results in better fuel efficiency and engine performance. The engine sips 6.6 liters of fuel per 100 km (US 35.64 mpg).

To further reduce the harmful impact of the engine on the environment, it features a Selective Catalytic Reduction System that reduces exhaust emissions by spraying a urea Diesel Exhaust Fluid into the exhaust to neutralize harmful gasses.
The diesel engine is offered exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission that drives the rear wheels. The G80 is also offered in Australia with two petrol engines, a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 300 hp and 311 lb-ft (422 Nm) of torque and a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 with 374 hp and 391 lb-ft (530 Nm). Both have the same eight-speed auto as the diesel, although the 2.5T is only sold as a rear-wheel drive while the 3.5T is all-wheel drive.
Genesis has slotted the 2.2D variant into the middle of the range, pricing it from AU$87,900, making it AU$3,000 more expensive than the 2.5T and AU$12,000 cheaper than the 3.5T AWD.
