I don’t know about you, but I’ve always longed for a film score to punctuate moments of my life and give them more dramatic heft than they currently have. Ask and ye shall receive says Bentley because they’ve created adaptive music for their cars.
Through a collaboration with LifeScore, the automaker has created a musical system that will react to your inputs and play music to match your driving style.
Coming up to your favorite on-ramp and want some music to match the skill with which you negotiate the tight right-hander and the sweeping left? Adaptive music takes throttle position, acceleration, and more into consideration to generate music that captures the excitement of the moment. Feeling a little more low-key now that you’re on the highway and want something to help match your imperious mood as you surf down the highway? Bentley will play more relaxed music to get you to your destination in serene comfort.

Although the score was recorded by real artists, using classical and modern instruments, the sounds are broken up in such a way that the adaptive music system can actually compose music on the fly. The musicians create blocks of raw musical material that are selected, combined, and layered in real-time.
As a result, on a 60-minute drive, more than 100 billion unique music tracks could be composed by the system, so you’re unlikely to become bored by the same tune playing over and over again. Using composition techniques, though, the music generated works through themes and variations to make sure what’s being played sounds musical. It’s like having Philip Glass in the passenger seat!
Bentley says that for now, this is just a demonstration of what’s possible. The adaptive music system will be ready for its first fully electric vehicle, though, which will be based on Audi’s upcoming platform and is expected to debut in 2025.
