BMW isn’t resting on its laurels with the new M3 and M4 and not long after a rumored M4 CS/CSL was spotted testing at the Nurburgring, a more hardcore variant of the M3 was also nabbed at the German track.
This video shows a heavily disguised prototype undergoing testing at the Ring. BMW has done quite a good job of hiding some of the car’s new design details but some distinctive features are visible.
For example, it appears as though this prototype has a slightly more pronounced lip spoiler. The wheels also appear to be larger and it also features gold brake calipers. Of course, we expect a number of other modifications to be made for the eventual production model.

If this is indeed an even more performance-focused version of the M3, BMW will no doubt work its magic on the car’s 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six to give it a touch more grunt than the 503 hp and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) offered up by the M3 Competition. Various weight-saving measures will also be employed, including the more comprehensive use of carbon fiber throughout the exterior and interior to shed some unnecessary pounds. BMW can also be expected to make suspension and braking improvements to complement the added power.
The prototype featured in this video is, according to the description, fitted with an eight-speed automatic transmission, just like the existing M3 and M4 models. While we are still holding out hope that a six-speed manual will also be offered, it’s too early to know if that will be the case.
