The first examples of the 2021 Acura TLX Type S will arrive in dealerships tomorrow and to celebrate its launch, the Japanese automaker has released a video detailing the car’s development.
Powering the TLX Type S is a new 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 pumping out 355 hp and 354 lb-ft (480 Nm) of torque. This engine is assembled in the company’s Anna Engine Plant in Ohio and was developed in Japan under the guidance of Akio Matsuda. Members involved in the engine’s development included individuals who have also worked on the engines of the Honda Civic Type R and Acura NSX. In fact, Acura notes that the TLX Type S’s engine borrows some technologies from the NSX’s powertrain.

A key feature of the engine is its twin-scroll turbocharger that helps minimize turbo lag while also optimizing throttle response. The intake and exhaust cams use variable timing control to further improve responsiveness and power. In addition, the engine features Variable Cylinder Management that operates the engine on three cylinders in a host of different situations. Acura also developed bespoke engine mounts and Active Vibration Control to cancel out any vibrations from the chassis and the engine when it is only operating on three cylinders.
Acura’s engineers took inspiration from the NSX in developing the exhaust for the TLX Type S. This system includes a butterfly valve in each muffler and when open, the valves make the exhaust 5-7 decibels louder.
It’s not just the engine that makes the TLX Type S an impressive performer. The sedan has been equipped with double-wishbone front suspension and adaptive dampers that result in very impressive handling.
Prices for the 2021 Acura TLX Type S start at $52,300 excluding a $1,025 destination charge.
