London Electric Cars (LEC), a UK-based company, is now offering an EV conversion package for classic Minis, with their kit using pre-owned Nissan Leaf motors and batteries.
LEC’s base conversion package comes with a 20 kWh battery pack, which according to the company is enough to give a classic Mini a driving range of 60 to 70 miles (96 to 113 km). Customers will also be offered the chance to opt for a more powerful electric motor and a bigger battery pack as an option.

LEC wanted their EV conversion kit to not only be one of the most cost-effective in the market but also one of the most sustainable in terms of their end-to-end vehicle lifecycle impact.
The price for the base LEC conversion kit is set from £25,000 ($35,400 in current exchange rates), excluding local taxes, shipping, and the donor car. LEC will also provide the service of sourcing a donor car as an option. Each converted classic Mini takes around six weeks to transform to run on electric power and there’s currently a waiting time of around six months.
“As a classic car enthusiast and advocate for affordable and sustainable electric vehicle conversions, it made sense for us to focus on the original Mini,” said Matthew Quitter, Founder and Managing Director of London Electric Cars. “Alec Issigonis was one of the most collaborative and free-thinking designers, but also someone who knew how to stick to a budget. With this EV conversion, we wanted the classic Mini to be an affordable yet useful option for city dwellers, not just in our home town of London but all over the world to tackle traffic and help put a stop to pollution.”
Aside from recycling Nissan Leaf motors and batteries, LEC is also planning to reuse and renew computer hardware and batteries inside traction packs. The company uses additive manufacturing technologies for its production and engineering of the Mini conversion kit.
LEC also offers EV conversion kits for classic models like the Morris Minor, Morris Traveller, and the original Land Rover Defender.
