Few electric vehicles have generated as much buzz as, well, the ID.BUZZ — perhaps partly due to the spiritual successor to the Microbus’s rocky, on-again, off-again development plan. However, the ID Buzz has been in the works for several years now and looks to finally carry on the legacy of VW’s cult favorite.

Following our first look at a test car with a production body, our spies have managed to track down a test mule for the upcoming MPV. Disguised as a VW Transporter to the outside world, the test car appears to be a run-of-the-mill van. However, the dimensions and squat stance of the would-be T6 indicate that this is far from a production vehicle.

More importantly, our spy photographers were able to get a good view of the mule’s cabin, snapping what could very well be the first signs of what VW will do for the ID Buzz’s interior. The crude prototype nature of the cabin tells us that nothing is representative of the final product yet, but we do see a few parts shared with other electric VW models.

The main elements seem lifted, or at least very similar to, Volkswagen’s ID.4 electric crossover. These include the flat and protruding center screen, and the curved digital binnacle placed ahead of the driver, complete with an integrated parking brake button.

Of course, all of these could be placeholders until a final interior design is settled upon, but since the ID Buzz will use the same MEB platform as the ID.4, it would make sense that the two would share components.

When it comes to platform sharing, if the ID.4 is anything to go by, range predictions for the ID Buzz are somewhere around 550 km (341 miles on the WLTP test cycle).

As reported earlier, the ID Buzz will be offered in the US in 2023 as an MY2024 model. Volkswagen also expects to launch an autonomous version of the ID Buzz in 2025, with VW and Argo AI scheduled to unleash level-four autonomous vans for an evaluation around the streets of Hamburg this summer.
