Ford‘s all-electric Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 has just broken an NHRA record. With driver Bob Tasca III at the wheel, the car ran an 8.128-second quarter mile at 171.97 mph (276.76 km/h), beating the previous record of 8.27 seconds at 168 mph (270 km/h) from last September.

It should be noted that Tasca is no stranger to drag racing Mustangs. Back in 2007 he set the alcohol-fueled funny car record in his Mustang funny car with a 5.451-second quarter mile at 263 mph (423 km/h), and even today he’s still piloting a Mustang funny car, albeit a more modern one.

And on the topic of modern Mustangs, the Cobra Jet 1400 is said to have the power of around three gas-powered Mustang GTs according to Ford. But despite the 1400 in its name, its powertrain is actually different than the similar-sounding Mustang Mach-E 1400‘s. While the racing Mach-E has 7 motors outputting a combined 1,400 hp (1,419 PS / 1,044 kW), the Cobra Jet has 4 motors making 1,500 hp (1,521 PS / 1,119 kW).

It’s still a little unusual to see the car shoot off the line (and pull a lengthy wheelie) without any noise, given how much of the drag racing experience from a spectating point of view comes from the sound, but it’s certainly interesting in its own right. Regardless, the Cobra Jet 1400 proves to be an incredibly impressive machine, and you can watch it silently complete its record-breaking pass in Ford Performance’s video below.
