Yesterday we reported that the new Honda Civic Si would be coming in October of this year as per a leaked marketing roadmap, but now, the automaker has confirmed themselves that a new Civic Hybrid and Type R will both be arriving in 2022.
They don’t specify much on the hybrid other than the fact that it will use their e:HEV 2-motor hybrid system, so we have yet to find out which engine it will be paired to. However, there are hybrid vehicles in Honda’s European lineup that use a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine similar to the one found in the new Civic, so that’s likely the one that will be receiving the hybrid. Additionally, it is not yet clear whether the hybrid will be available only as a hatchback or the sedan will received the treatment as well.

The biggest news here, though, is that the Type R will in fact be making a return for the 11th-gen Civic. There were no details given on this one, but it’s safe to expect a similar formula to the outgoing version. That would mean a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine powering the front wheels, likely with a power bump over the current Type R.

The car may still be manual-only, and it’s not expected to go hybrid or all-wheel drive, with Honda officials having said that it will likely be the last gas-only-powered performance model to go on sale. As for styling, they’ll obviously turn it up a notch for the Type R, but given the new Civic hatchback’s mature looks it’s probably safe to expect something a little more restrained than the outgoing one. There was no information on pricing, but expect the hybrid to be slightly more expensive than the regular 11th-gen Civic, and the Type R slightly more expensive than the outgoing one.
