MINI Vision Urbanaut Makes The Jump From Digital To Real Life Concept

If you’re experiencing déjà vu, you’re not alone as MINI has unveiled the Vision Urbanaut for a second time.

While that seems strange, the concept was originally introduced last November as a digital-only creation. It has now transformed into a physical vehicle, which will celebrate its debut at DLD Summer on July 1st.

Putting that aside, the physical concept closely echoes the previous renderings as the Vision Urbanaut is a futuristic van that has a single sliding door and an expansive glass roof. Designers also gave the model illuminated wheels, minimalist fascias, and a windscreen that can lift up when the vehicle is parked.

While the exterior design is certainly interesting, the concept is all about the interior and the “clever use of space.” Looking more like a hipster lounge than a car interior, the cabin features a swiveling driver’s seat that wouldn’t look out of place at Ikea. The concept also sports a minimalist front passenger seat and a dashboard that lowers to turn into a daybed.

The quirkiness doesn’t end there as the concept features a sectional-like rear seat, a planter and a small table. The interior lacks leather and chrome, and this is sadly a sign of things to come as MINI said this approach will be rolled out in the next-generation of vehicles.

Instead, the interior embraces renewable and recyclable materials such as textiles made from recycled wool, polyester and Tencel. Elsewhere, there’s cork on the steering wheel and sections of the floor.

As before, the concept features so-called “MINI moments” – known as Chill, Wanderlust and Vibe – which each have their own fragrance, sound and ambient lighting. Chill is for relaxing or working, while Vibe transforms the concept into a mini club with animated graphic equalizers being shown inside and outside the vehicle. Wanderlust is the only mode for driving and it deploys the steering wheel and pedals to deal with the task at hand.

MINI didn’t say much else about the concept, but that’s not too surprising as it’s a flight of fancy.
