The Kia Niro is showing its age, but it holds a special place in the company’s lineup as it’s an eco-friendly model that offers hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains.

The age thing won’t be an issue much longer as the company is working on a redesigned model, which was previewed by the 2019 HabaNiro concept.

As you can see in these latest spy photos, the 2022 / 2023 Niro features a more expressive front end with a large air intake that is flanked by distinctively shaped lighting units. The model also sports streamlined styling, plastic body cladding and a charging port on one of the prototypes.

Other notable highlights include a faux skid plate, an evolutionary greenhouse and a more dynamic rear end with boomerang-shaped LED taillights that climb up the rear pillar. We can also see a rounded rear bumper with new reflectors and reverse lights.

Spy photographers haven’t gotten close enough to snap interior pictures, but we can expect an improved cabin with higher quality materials and a modern infotainment system. Specifics are lacking, but Kia has made serious strides in terms of interior quality and design, and that trend should continue with the Niro.

Engine options remain unconfirmed, but we can expect the model to continue to offer hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains. The latter should give Kia an affordable EV that appeals to customers with wallets that can’t accommodate the all-new EV6.
