Infotainment systems have become a core part of the vehicle ownership experience and Porsche is looking to improve things by introducing their sixth-generation Porsche Communication Management system.

Set to debut in the 911, Cayenne and Panamera this summer, the upgraded infotainment system features improved graphics, a more intuitive layout and Android Auto support. The latter’s absence has been a big oversight, but unfortunately it appears Porsche won’t support wireless Android Auto as they specifically mentioned a connection “via a USB cable.”

iPhone owners get more love as there’s wireless Apple CarPlay as well as integrated support for Apple Music and Apple Podcasts. Linking your account also sounds pretty painless as the automaker said “customers can link their Apple ID to their vehicle in the Porsche Connect app or online at My Porsche to get started.”

The Apple lovefest doesn’t end there as Porsche’s Manager of Navigation and Infotainment, Martin Bayer, said “With Apple Music built-in, the driver can add a song they hear on broadcast radio to their Apple Music library or, if the driver likes a particular artist on the radio, they can switch to a custom Apple Music station that will only play that artist’s music.”

Putting Apple and Google aside, the infotainment system has improved Voice Pilot technology which responds to the “Hey Porsche” wake word. It can be used to make natural language requests such as “I need petrol” or “I am cold.”

When it comes time to navigate, you’ll be happy to know the sixth-generation system has new hardware and software that allows for “even faster calculations by the navigation system – always taking into account real-time traffic information.” The navigation system also has a streamlined map view and a better presentation of real-time traffic data.

Last but not least, there are several new functions borrowed from the Taycan. These include an interactive ‘Good to know’ operating manual and smartphone calendar entries. The infotainment system also supports over-the-air updates, which should allow it to improve over time.
