The 2021 Formula 1 season is only 7 races in, but we already have our first glimpse of what the cars will look like next year after the sporting regulation change. Photos of the 2022 car were leaked before what was supposedly going to be a reveal at Silverstone, which is nearly a month away if true.

The new car aims to fix everything wrong with the current ones, mainly that they were too large and created too much aerodynamic disturbance in their wake. Those problems in turn made for cars that were harder to follow, resulting in less overtaking and wheel-to-wheel action.

As you can see from the photos by LiveGP, the design of the new car has been smoothed out and simplified considerably to reduce reliance on wings and other disturbing aero, and instead uses things like ground effects to regain some of that lost downforce. And while not confirmed, CAD models have shown the new car to be shorter than the current one, which should slightly help alleviate the issue of them being too large to pass each other. Not pictured in the photos are the car’s wheels, which will be increasing in diameter from 13″ to 18″ for 2022.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that this is just a show car created for the reveal event. In other words, it’s a hypothetical starting point, so we will almost definitely see the design start to change as teams put their own spins on it. Regardless of what ends up happening, it should hopefully make for closer racing and possibly a shake-up from the usual winning teams.
