Back in 2019, Bugatti unveiled the La Voiture Noire, a one-off version of the Chiron that, at the time, was the most expensive car you could buy new. That car was just a proof of concept that used a small electric motor to get around, but now, the finished item is here and it’s ready to be delivered to its owner.
La Voiture Noire (“The Black Car” in French) was created as an homage to Jean Bugatti’s Type 57 SC Atlantic with the same nickname. As such, it features an extended wheelbase, all new bodywork, a Havana Brown interior, and of course, black exposed carbon fiber to hearken back to the original while still keeping with Bugatti‘s modern design language.

Despite its ultra-limited run of just one unit, the car still underwent all the rigorous scrutiny that a regular Bugatti would go through – and then some. Every single new component had to pass their strict quality control procedures, then the car had to be re-run through the simulations, wind tunnel, and test track on account of its new bodywork and wheelbase, among other things. As Pierre Rommelfanger, Head of Coachbuilding Projects at Bugatti, explained, “Although the La Voiture Noire is a one-off, we spent two years using a test vehicle to develop and test it in all areas like handling and driving safety so that it can be approved.”

“With the La Voiture Noire, we are paying our respects to our long tradition, to France, and to Jean Bugatti’s creative work,” said Bugatti President Stephan Winkelmann. “At the same time, we are bringing exceptional technology, aesthetics, and extreme luxury into a new age. The La Voiture Noire is at the cutting edge of automotive engineering. It is a sculptural beauty that boasts unique technology.”
