Volvo introduced the C40 Recharge earlier this year and a new report suggests it will be joined by an even smaller electric crossover.

Little is known about the model at this point, but Car Magazine says it will be a B-segment crossover that could adopt either the XC20 or XC30 moniker.

The model will reportedly compete with relatively mainstream crossovers including the Ford Puma, Peugeot e-2008 and Opel / Vauxhall Mokka-e. However, it’s probably safe to assume the XC20 or XC30 would be a bit more luxurious and carry a heftier starting price.

Performance specifications remain a mystery, but the entry-level crossover is expected to be offered exclusively with an electric powertrain as Volvo is going electric-only by 2030. That being said, the XC20 / XC30 could be front-wheel drive only as the publication suggests it will only have a single electric motor up front. That could limit the model’s appeal, but the Mokka-e is also front-wheel drive only.

If everything pans out, the model will reportedly be launched in 2023. While a lot of questions remain, Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson has previously said the crossover will ride on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture.

At the time, Samuelsson said “I think it’s very practical and smart for us to share that [platform], so we can have a cost structure for a smaller car that’s very competitive.” The executive also hinted the upcoming model wouldn’t be very rugged as he noted “ground clearance and off-roading capability are probably not the most important things now.”
