Ever since Land Rover introduced a new Defender, it was only a matter of time until Bowler Motors got their hands on it.

The inevitable has now occurred as the companies have taken the wraps off the new Bowler Defender Challenge.

Based on the Defender 90, the Bowler Defender Challenge is a heavily modified model that will compete in a one-make rallying series. Given this, the SUV has been equipped with a modified front end that increases airflow to the upgraded cooling system.

Elsewhere, there are polycarbonate windows, auxiliary lights and a new rear spoiler. The changes don’t stop there as the model has been equipped with a raised air intake, a sports exhaust system and 18-inch rally-spec wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires.

Driven: Land Rover’s New Defender Might Be The Ultimate SUV

While the Defender is already rugged, Bowler installed beefier front and rear subframes, additional monocoque bracing, and stronger mounts for the engine, transmission and radiator.

The model has also been equipped with a bespoke suspension developed in collaboration with Fox. It features new springs and dampers as well as a 1-inch (25 mm) higher ride height.

Moving into the stripped out interior, drivers will find a quick release steering wheel, a full roll cage and racing seats with six-point harnesses. The model also has a fire suppression system, a repositioned gear selector and paddle shifters on the steering column.

Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that produces 296 hp (221 kW / 300 PS). The companies didn’t say how fast the model is, but the standard Defender 90 with that engine accelerates from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 6.7 seconds and has a top speed of 119 mph (191 km/h).

The SUV will compete in the Bowler Defender Challenge series, which is slated to consist of seven events across the United Kingdom next year. The series is focused on fun and will be open to veteran competitors as well as those with no competition experience.

However, competitors will need a sizable wallet as the 2022 Challenge costs £99,500 ($138,343 / €116,816) and includes the Defender Challenge, entry into the series as well as event support. Customers can also opt for options such as training, series logistics and vehicle support.
