Online configurators are both a gift to humankind and a bane for any car-nut who wants to be productive. We’ve lost count on how many times and on how many sites we’ve whiled away the hours, spec’ing fantasy perfection. It turns out, even Bugatti has their own dedicated configurator, but it’s kept off-limits to us plebeians, lest we dream of winning the lottery or inheriting unknown millions.
Luckily for us, one mere mortal was granted (limited) access to go wild. Daniel Golson from CNET wasn’t fortunate enough to have a set of keys to a $3.6m hypercar, but Bugatti did grant him access to play around in the Chiron Pur Sport’s secret customer configurator – for an hour.

Now, considering the fact that Daniel probably isn’t going to be 1 of the 60 people actually to have a custom-made Chiron delivered to his doorstep, you can imagine that he let his imagination run free as we probably all would. Jascha Straub, Bugatti’s design and sales representative, joined via Zoom to virtually build the Chiron Pur Sport as to his instruction. Straub used to be a designer at Bugatti, working on some of their exclusive models, such as the Divo and Centodieci, but right now, he’s the man you talk to when you want your hypercar personalized.
Chiron owners apparently aren’t the most daring breed when it comes to personalizing their cars, with most opting for the not-so-brave blue paint scheme featured on the launch spec. Other traditional colors like black or red abound too. Which is why his first significant choice (a color split option that has the front end of the Chiron painted a different color from the rear) was metallic copper paint along with a contrasting Twilight Purple color split that for the second half of the car.

Unlike the regular Chiron, the entire front bumper of the Pur Sport is made of carbon fiber and includes a black mesh that can be customized to have the standard horseshoe mesh, or a trim called bright matrix. As mentioned before, brave was the goal, so the chrome finish was selected — apparently, an option chosen by very few actual Chiron owners. The chrome accent can be seen framing the C-line of the car and on all the badging as well.
That brings us to his next extensive choice, wheels, with the virtual Pur Sport sporting a specific aero design. The wheels are made of magnesium, with the outer part in purple and the inner discs in copper to match the rest of the theme. Classy, we think.
But the exterior option that had us most excited about was the customizable exposed elements of the W16 engine — mainly the cylinder heads. As standard, Bugatti has them in silver, but Daniel obviously went for the polished aluminum finish. Bugatti advises their clients against this option as it has a tendency to get scratched and dirty over time, but hey, that isn’t really an issue in this scenario.
As for the interior, prospective owners get to choose between a couple of dozen leather and Alcantara color options. But over-the-top is the order of the day, so a vibrant purple leather scheme across the seats, dashboard, headliner, and most of the remaining bits were selected. Unfortunately, the interior copper didn’t quite match, so if you were trying to go down this brazen route, then you’d have to settle for a bright white option that at least works well with the exterior chrome bits.
Do you think Bugatti should open up their configurator to more people, or are you happy that it’s one less distraction to steal away your precious time?
