The market for official restorations is growing as high-end brands with long histories like Lamborghini and Ferrari open their own in-house restoration arms. Now, Bugatti is joining them, but its first car is much younger than most.
The company started its first restoration with the “La Maison Pur Sang” program in 2020. Although the history of Bugatti stretches back into the early 1900s, the new service’s first job was the first Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport prototype.
As a prototype, the car has traveled extensively, doing show car duty in North America, Europe, and the Middle East. Despite that, or maybe because of that, it was never actually registered by a private owner.

“Following this official confirmation of the car’s status as an important historic model and the prototype that helped launch the Veyron Grand Sport in 2008, the car rapidly attracted attention from a number of captivated collectors, as was acquired almost immediately,” says Luigi Galli, who heads La Maison Pur Sang.
Designated “Grand Sport 2.1”, it was finished in silver metallic paint with a Cognac leather interior, which it maintains today. Bugatti reacquired the car in 2020 to do a full strip-down restoration.
Thanks to its extensive records, Bugatti was able to confirm the vehicle’s originality through its VIN number and the identification numbers stamped on its key components. It then removed and repainted the body panels, refurbished or replaced all of the leather and aluminum trim, and replaced the center console to match the car’s original configuration.
Now that the restoration is done, Bugatti is offering this service to all of its customers, which it says could even enhance the value of a collector vehicle. The automaker is also offering a number of other services to verify model authenticity from vehicles throughout the marque’s history.
