Among Ford’s many production issues this year, the new Bronco has had its fair share of troubles. Now, some reports by owners are raising concerns about flawed hardtops.

Several threads on the Bronco6G forum have outlined issues related to the Bronco’s hardtop, with one owner posting photos of scratches on their roof and edges that appear to be splitting.

Another owner posted pictures of a hardtop with a honeycomb structure visible through its outer layer. Forum members posited that the lattice structure of the roof was showing underneath a thin layer of laminate, making it look like it had aged all of a sudden. The owner does say, though, that they waxed the roof shortly before the honeycomb appeared.

A third post, meanwhile, shows photos of several two-door Broncos outside of a plant with “Bad Roof” written on them.

Exactly what’s at the heart of these issues isn’t known yet, but a Ford spokesperson told us that “we maintain quality inspection before delivery. We want to make sure our customers are getting the highest quality product.”

He added if there are any customer issues, Ford is happy to work with them and their local dealer to sort them out.

Reports from earlier this month highlighted issues with Ford’s supplier Webasto. The German company whose tooling was all located in areas hit hard by the pandemic was struggling to keep up with demand for the Bronco.

A Ford spokesperson said at the time that Ford was working with Webasto to possibly open a second facility in Metro Detroit to catch up with demand, but the company was also forced to send some hardtop Broncos out to customers with a soft top and a “hardtop prep kit,” per Road & Track.

The supply issues also meant that in March, Ford announced that the optional body-color hardtop would not be available for the 2021 model year Bronco. Instead, all models would either get the soft top or the gray “molded-in-color” (MIC) top.

The problem is particularly relevant for two-door owners since the model is not available with the soft top. Ford’s spokesperson, though, told us that the company is continuing to ship both two- and four-door Broncos with the hardtop and that, although Bronco demand is exceeding supply, Ford continues to work to get as many high-quality roofs out there as possible.
