General Motors isn’t particularly fussed with Chevrolet dealerships selling C8 Corvette models with significant, and sometimes eye-watering, markups.
While it has been two years since the C8-generation Corvette was first unveiled, dealerships are continuing to slap the mid-engined sports car with markups as high as $100,000 over the MSRP. However, during a recent interview with GM Authority, Chevrolet’s director of car and crossover marketing, Tony Johnson, said dealerships are simply responding to demand.
“Dealers are the interface with the customers, so customers make the deal with the dealer, so we leave that side of the business to our great dealer partners, who I think do a fantastic job, honestly, meeting customer needs and helping them through the journey,” he said.

When quizzed if GM or Chevrolet would do anything to discourage dealerships from selling C8s with high markups, Johnson said: “Well, it’s supply and demand. We supply them, the dealers meet the demand.”
Even though we’re sure some buyers aren’t happy with paying over MSRP for the privilege of purchasing the in-demand mid-engined Corvette, sales of the car have been very strong since its launch. Throughout the 2020 calendar year, no less than 21,626 units were sold in the United States, despite the coronavirus pandemic.
Sales are on track to be even stronger in 2021 with 14,582 examples sold in the first six months alone. That’s particularly impressive when you consider that production, and therefore supply, has been impacted multiple times by the ongoing semiconductor shortage.
