General Motors thought about giving the GMC Hummer EV removable doors but ultimately decided against it in its pursuit of luxury.
The GMC Hummer EV will hit the market as one of GM’s most capable off-road vehicles but due in part to its advanced electric powertrain, it will be much more expensive than the likes of the Jeep Wrangler/Gladiator and Ford Bronco, vehicles that all feature removable doors. While speaking with Muscle Cars & Trucks, lead Hummer EV exterior designer John Mack explained why the company didn’t follow suit.
“We looked into [removable doors] and this truck being premium, we felt like if you do removable doors or anything like that, it kind of would take away from the (premium) execution,” he explained. “But as far as off-road cues – flag mounts and things like that – that’s something that accessories can get into.”

Interestingly, the GMC Hummer EV does have removable roof panels like the Wrangler and Bronco, a feature that promises to add to the driving experience.
Moving forward, many accessories will be offered for the Hummer EV. In fact, Mack revealed that there will be about 200 accessories available to buyers.
“We’ve added a lot of things like the lightbar and the GoPro camera mount on the front hood that really enable the off road experience in a really new way,” Mack said. “A techy way as well, the underside cameras that can also look at the rocks you’re clearing. They take the off-road experience into a new era.”
The flagship GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 will launch later this year priced at $112,595 and will be followed by more affordable variants in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
