Yet again, Porsche has been caught testing a lifted version of the 911 at the world’s most famous test track, the Nurburgring. Maybe it’s our imaginations, but the prototype looks taller than it ever has before in these shots.
Hard though it may be to tell, the prototype is certainly taller than a standard 911, suggesting that Porsche is looking to produce a high-riding rally-inspired version of its legendary sports car for the 992 generation. With a rich history in rally racing, there are many precedents for such a model, but perhaps the most famous is the Rothmans liveried Paris-Dakar-competing 959 that has served as inspiration for many of the off-road 911s we’ve been seeing lately.

Porsche asked Singer to take down videos and marketing material relating to an off-road 911 it had produced while Marc Philipp Gemballa is expected to release his own ode to the adventurous Porsche this week.
As for this model, this is the second time we’ve seen it at the Nurburgring, which likely means that the car will be able to handle itself on the road, as you’d hope for from a 911. With a front bumper that looks a little raised in the middle and quite a bit of suspension travel, it should also be able to handle itself off the road.
For those wondering why somebody who wants a Porsche that can also go off-road doesn’t just buy themselves one of the SUVs the company also sells, Marc-Philipp Gemballa has said that he’s doing it because the horsepower wars are old hat. Porsche has been setting quite a few lap records around the world, but how much good does a new record do? It also seems like the dune-crashing rich people from the Middle East might like to be able to buy a 911 that they can involve in their favorite hobby.
Unfortunately, details on just when this car will be unveiled to the public and just how many the company plans to make are still unknown. All we can hope for is that those answers comes soon.
