Lexus is gearing up for its future range which will include 10 new hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and BEV models by 2025. While we can’t guess all of them, a new report from Japanese magazine Mag-X suggests that Lexus is working on a small hybrid SUV based on the Toyota Yaris Cross, designed for the European, Japanese, and Australian markets.

The conversation for a Lexus baby SUV was initiated in 2015 with the unveiling of the LF-SA design study. Rumors came back stronger in 2020 after the premiere of the Toyota Yaris Cross, while a few months later Lexus trademarked the LBX name which could be used for the alleged new model.

The new B-SUV would slot below the UX in Lexus’ range. While not so relevant for the US market, this segment is quite popular in Europe, where nearly all automakers are offering at least one jacked-up supermini with a more spacious interior and adventurous styling. The rumored Lexus LBX would have similar dimensions with the Yaris Cross, which measures 4,180 mm (164.6 inches) long, 1,765 mm (69.5 inches) wide, and 1,560 mm (61.4 inches) tall.

The report claims that the baby Lexus would be based on the GA-B platform, using the same hybrid setup with the Yaris Cross. This means it would combine the three-cylinder 1.5 VVT-i engine with two (FWD) or three electric motors (AWD-i), producing 114 hp (85 kW / 116 PS) and 120 Nm (88.5 lb-ft). While those specs won’t impress premium buyers, they will be enough to rival the likes of the DS 3 Crossback.

Besides the rumored small SUV, Lexus has confirmed that they will be launching the production version of the LF-Z Electrified concept as their first EV, sharing bones with the upcoming Toyota bZ4X. There are also rumors for a GR86-based Lexus after a prototype was spied. As you can tell, Lexus design and engineering departments should be pretty busy right now.
