McLaren 650S Spider Driver Reminded That Lane Splitting Doesn’t Work In Cars

It can be tempting, when at the wheel of a car that possesses great power, to act like anything is possible. Sadly, no matter how much it feels like you can master the forces of physics, the forces of physics are always the master of you.

That’s what the owner of this McLaren 650S Spider that unews.pro reports was driving in Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, found out while trying to pass a Kia Stonic. Changing lanes, the Kia driver suddenly found a McLaren where they wanted to be as the supercar tried to overtake it on the inside, leading to a collision.

While I’m not in the business of defending supercar drivers who weave through traffic, I will allow that the Kia driver chose a bad moment to change lanes and should have been more aware of their surroundings.

Fortunately, although the damage to the cars is likely enough to have ruined both drivers’ day, it looks minor enough not to have caused any serious injuries.

A second video, shot from the street, shows the damage to both cars. In it, the Kia can be seen with its bumper and grille torn almost completely off. The damage to the McLaren looks fairly contained, by comparison, with scratches and dings only really visible on the rear driver-side quarter panel. No matter how it looks, though, I still wouldn’t want to be the one who’s responsible for the damage.

Powered by a 4-liter twin-turbocharged V8, the McLaren 650S Spider makes 641 hp (650 PS/478 kW) and 500 lb-ft (678 Nm) of torque. That’s good enough to get it off the line and up to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just three seconds and all the way up to a top speed of 204 mph (329 km/h).

Despite all that power, you still need a patch of road big enough to put it all down or else you end up like this car: battered and bruised.
