We had to check our calendars when the latest news from Ford landed in our inbox but as it turns out, this isn’t an April Fools joke; Ford has introduced a new fragrance, called “Mach-Eau”, which according to the carmaker is designed to make the transition to EVs easier for petrolheads. And while real, it’s not available for sale.
According to a Ford-commissioned survey, one in five drivers said the smell of petrol is what they would miss the most when they’ll transition to an electric vehicle, with almost 70 percent saying that they would miss the smell of petrol to some degree.

Ford revealed the new fragrance alongside the European debut of the 480HP Mustang Mach-E GT at the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed “to usher these drivers into the future of driving through their sense of smell”. However, it doesn’t smell like petrol though, for obvious health-related reasons (and probably some legal ones too). Instead, Ford’s new Mach-Eau fuses “smoky accords, aspects of rubber, and even an ‘animal’ element to give a nod to the Mustang heritage.”
The new fragrance is going to be a part of Ford’s strategy of helping dispel myths around electric cars and will not become available for sale, so don’t get your credit cards out just yet.
Ford’s Mach-Eau fragrance was created by renowned fragrance consultancy Olfiction with the help of Pia Long, an Associate Perfumer in the British Society of Perfumers. Long’s starting point was to look into the chemicals responsible for the smell of car interiors.
These included benzaldehyde, responsible for the almond-like scent given off by car interiors, and para-cresol, one of the key chemicals in creating the rubbery scent of tires. These were mixed with ingredients like blue ginger, lavender, geranium, and sandalwood, adding metallic, smoky, and further rubbery accents, along with an unspecified ‘animal’ element to give the impression of horses, underlining the Mustang heritage.
The new Mustang Mach-E GT is the new range-topping version of Ford’s electric SUV. The two electric motors offer a combined 480 HP (487 PS) and 634 lb-ft (860 Nm) of torque, allowing the Mach-E GT to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in 3.7 seconds. Customers in Europe can now place an order online. For the Mach-E, not the fragrance.
