A few months after its debut, gamers can now drive the 2022 Toyota GR 86 in Gran Turismo Sport.
A free update announced by Gran Turismo developer Polyphony Digital brings with it the new GR 86 and while the new Toyota is far from the fastest and most exciting car available in the game, its inclusion will provide many gamers with their first opportunity to take a thorough look at the car’s new design and improved performance.

The key update made to the 2022 GR 86 is the fitment of a larger Subaru-sourced 2.4-liter flat-four boxer that in North American spec pumps out 228 hp and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque. This new engine can be coupled to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic that drives the rear wheels.
While some are disappointed that Toyota didn’t give the GR 86 the turbocharger many fans have been crying out for, doing so would have increased the sports car’s price while also stealing sales away from the entry-level Supra with its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder.
New GR 86 models equipped with the six-speed manual can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 6.1 seconds, an improvement of 0.9 seconds over the old car. Of even more importance is the fact this engine produces peak torque at 3,700 rpm instead of 6,600 rpm, creating a much more usable powerband.
Gran Turismo Sport has been around since 2017 but next year, the long-awaited Gran Turismo 7 will be released. The new game was initially scheduled in for a debut in 2021 but its launch was pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.
