“The Lexus driving signature is something we will continue to stress because we believe electrification and driving pleasure are not in contradiction. In fact, it’s the opposite: they can go hand in hand,” Pascal Ruch, vice-president of Toyota Value Chain and Lexus Europe told Autocar.

Ruch also revealed that Lexus is planning to take advantage of the Toyota Gazoo Racing expertise for its future models, given that they will use the same underpinnings (TNGA and e-TNGA platforms).

It is well known that Akio Toyoda, Toyota President has a genuine interest in driving dynamics. Likewise, Koji Sato, Lexus President who also served as chief engineer in the development of the Lexus LC, prioritizes driving pleasure for the future of the brand. As Pascal Ruch describes it “they will never let Lexus models become boring from a design or experience point of view”.

The LF-Z Electrified Concept produced 536 hp (400 kW / 544 PS) and 400 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque allowing a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration in 3 seconds a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph). The 90 kWh battery offered a 600 km (373 miles) range. It also came with a steer-by-wire system and the new Direct4 four-wheel-drive system with advanced torque vectoring functions.

The production version is expected to closely match the specifications of the concept, with exterior and interior styling adjusted for production. The acceleration figure might be slightly toned-down – closer to the 4-second mark – but straight-line performance will still be on par with the quickest SUVs in the market. According to the latest reports, the LF-Z will sit lower to the ground than any other Lexus SUV, with the low center of gravity benefiting its handling characteristics.

The upcoming model won’t be Lexus’ first EV however as this title belongs to the UX 300e. However, it will be the first one to ride on the dedicated e-TNGA platform which will also underpin the upcoming Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra siblings among a plethora of future models.
