BMW‘s latest flagship sports car was the i8, which had a futuristic design, but in the early ’00s, instead of looking forward, the company took a look at its glorious past, and more specifically the 507 from the 1950s, as inspiration for the Z8.
This 2001 Z8 was sold new in Connecticut and prior to the seller’s acquisition in February 2021, it had spent time living in New York and South Carolina. It shows 26,000 miles (41,842 km) on the clock, despite being two decades old, and is being sold through Bring a Trailer with its original sales invoice, manufacturer’s literature, a tool kit, car cover, a clean Carfax report, and a clean South Carolina title.

Adorning the exterior of the car is a color fittingly known as Bright Red and it continues to sit on the original split-spoke 18-inch wheels with Bridgestone Potenza RE-040 tires measuring 245/45 front and 275/40 rear. A look inside the cabin reveals black leather with piano black accents alongside matching carpets and floor mats.
Powering the Z8 is the same 4.9-liter naturally aspirated V8 used by the E39-generation M5. From the factory, this engine was good for 394 hp and 368 lb-ft (499 Nm) of torque and it’s coupled to a six-speed manual transmission powering the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential.
The listing confirms the car set back the original buyer $142,537 in 2001. Accounting for inflation, that is $216,781 in today’s money and at the time of writing, with three days left in the auction, bidding had reached $193,000.
