It’s been a big month for people who want a brand new car from 20 years ago as Silverstone Auctions has listed a 2002 Volkswagen Golf GTI 25th Anniversary that is “indistinguishable from new.”
According to the auction house, the car, No. 0718, has driven just 8 miles (12.8 km) in its entire life and has been owned by just one person. The car was first registered in October 2002 but, unfortunately, the story of why it was simply parked is not relayed.
The GTI 25th Anniversary Edition was built to celebrate, as you might expect, the 25th anniversary of the legendary GTI name. A similar model was eventually sold as the GTI 337 in the U.S. and Canada because, of course, the GTI was introduced later to those markets than it was in Europe.

Based on the Mk4 Golf, the model was finished in Reflex Silver paint and featured 18×7.5 BBS RC wheels with a special ball-peen finish, a perforated leather shift boot and handbrake, red and black seatbelts, red and black upholstered Recaro seats, a factory body kit, a six-speed manual transmission, larger front brakes with red calipers, a lowered sport-tuned suspension, and brushed aluminum interior trim.
Power came from a 1.8-liter turbocharged inline-four that made 180 hp (182 PS/134 kW) and 174 lb-ft (235 Nm) of torque. All of the improvements were welcome additions to a GTI that had somewhat underwhelmed, according to contemporary reviews.
The car is offered without reserve, so it’s hard to know how much it’s likely to go for. I doubt it will go for as much as the Skyline GT-R V-Spec II Nur that’s currently up for auction, despite both being from 2002 and having less than 10 miles on the odometer.
The closest example I could find was a Golf GTI 25th Anniversary that sold in 2018 for £11,812. That car, though, had traveled 29,000 miles and was sold before the current love for modern classics had possessed the market. It will be interesting, therefore, to see how much this goes for since it’s hard to imagine what could make another Mk4 GTI worth more.
